The choice of fitness options available today are so numerous
that it probably makes your head spin! To put it into basics,
you generally have three categories to choose from and these
include: strength, cardio and combination workouts. Below is a
brief description of each of these categories.
Cardiovascular Workout This type of workout is called cardio for
one reason - it gets your heart pumping! Cardio exercises will
strengthen your heart and blood vessels as well as aid in the
loss of weight thru burning calories.
The easiest way to get a cardio workout is through walking. You
can also get a cardio workout through jogging, in-line skating,
cycling, rowing and swimming. If you're not the outdoorsy type
you can get a good cardio workout on a treadmill, stationary
bike, rowing machine, stair climber or an elliptical trainer.
Weight Lifting This type of workout is usually more popular with
men as women fear it will cause them to bulk up too much.
However, both men and women should include some type of weight
lifting regimen in their fitness program as it will help with
burning calories. Weight lifting can actually lower your resting
metabolism as well, which means you'll burn more calories and
fat even while you are relaxing!
Combination Workout You can achieve a combination of a strength
and cardio workout by performing certain activities. Probably
the most popular combination workout is circuit-training. This
workout includes a warm-up followed by stations that have you
perform strength exercises and then you finish with a cool-down.
Yoga and Pilates are two other types of fitness that fall into
the combination workout category and they are typically
streamlined towards core strength. These two types of fitness
programs can either be performed to promote relaxation or to
energize you.
